The CCC Strikes Back

Happy Halloween everyone!

Exposing the Big Game

By now you’ve all seen the photo circulating of the evil, scary little goblins in their Halloween/KKK masks (white sheets over their heads with holes cut out for the eyes and mouth) holding up a deed wolf and (for some unknown reason) an American flag. Well the CCC (Canine Clux Clan) are here to tell them that two can play at that game…

My New Vegan Shoes!

Check out my new vegan shoes. I bought them last week via Amazon for half the price as advertised on the Dr. Marten’s Store.  I have been wearing these all week (as my commuting shoes to/from Boston every day) and have received sooooo many compliments. Although, not all of the compliments were about my shoes, per se, but rather I was given props for my ability to “pull off the look” without looking “silly”. [And yes these are direct quotes from the comments I have received.]

I especially love these shoes paired with a skirt and black tights.

Back in my 20s and early 30s I lived in Dr. Marten’s shoes. To be honest,  I had forgotten how much I  luh-luh-looooove Dr. Marten’s shoes! When a fellow vegan told me that Dr. M offers *vegan* options, well I nearly screamed with joy!

Leave it to Dr. Marten’s to get with the times and offer us vegans something fashionable and functional.

Rock on with your bad self Dr. M.!!!!

🙂

The Monsters Among Us

1424513_641694362547429_1385493337_nTown of Rome, Wisconsin – This is Zoey’s story. I was killed by hunters the weekend of 10/25/13. I went missing on 10/25/13 at about 9:00 A.M. When my family was looking for me they asked some hunters (Neighbors) if they had seen me. They stated they did on 10/25/13 at about 9:30 A.M. They stated they threw sticks at me because I was disrupting their hunting but have not seen me since. On 10/26/13 my family asked the hunters (Neighbors) a second time if they seen me. They said no. My family searched for me every day for hours and hours, shouting, calling, walking miles but could not find me. On 10/28/13 my family found me 30 feet from the hunters (Neighbors) tree stand with an arrow hole through my back and neck. I was left to suffer and die. My body was in clear view of the…

There “used to be” Rhinos

Fight for Rhinos

Just back from Kenya. What an amazing experience-getting to see, hear and live the culture I’ve heard so much about! I’ve learned new things, made new friends, and of course was “over the moon” seeing all the magnificent wildlife I love so much.

My prized memory was at Ol Pejeta; seeing a black rhino in the distance. After a bit, he came galloping out of the bush at us. He stood there for minute or so as if sizing us up, then turned and ran back. It was incredible.

DSCF2388There were a few rhino in the Lake Nakuru area as well. But, having been to Samburu, Amboseli, and Masaai Mara, the one disturbing theme was “There used to be rhinos here.” There are now none in Samburu or Amboseli, and rare spottings in the Mara.

With poaching stats at almost 800 for this year alone, it’s no wonder they’re so…

Petition: Save Swedish wolves from wolf baiting/dogs

Exposing the Big Game

Save Swedish wolves from wolf baiting by using so called hunting dogs.

This petition is awaiting approval by the Avaaz Community
Save Swedish wolves from wolf baiting by using so called hunting dogs.

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Repeal_Hunting_Ordinance_Section_28_with_immediate_effect_to_stop_current_wolf_baiting_by_using_so_called_hunting_dogs/?fbdm

Recently since mid year 2013 already nine wolves were killed with the persons in question claiming the right to kill in terms of the amended Hunting Ordinance Section 28.
This law enables the killing of wolves when pets are attacked or when people are being threatened by the presence of a wolf (self defense). However, this amended law opened the door to wolf baiting, using ‘hunting dogs’ as bait to lure wolves into attack, thus making it legal for the owner of the dog to kill the wolf in terms of this law. To amend this section 28 to make it impossible for dog owners to use. To establish wolf hot spots where dogs may not be unleashed and to police and investigate incidents thoroughly to determine whether…

The War Between CNN and SeaWorld Over ‘Blackfish’ Escalates

Animal Rights

Tonight, the documentary about captive orcas, Blackfish, premieres on CNN. The film centers on the 2010 death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau by Tilikum, raising serious questions about the highly profitable practice of keeping killer whales in captivity. While SeaWorld has criticized film, they have declined requests by CNN to be interviewed on camera. But, this week, company spokesman Fred Jacobs did provide written answers to a few of the most poignant issues in the documentary.

Most of these topics are discussed in my book, Death at SeaWorld: Shamu and the Dark Side of Killer Whales in Captivity. Readers will recognize SeaWorld’s latest attempt at positive spin as part of its eternal drive to make orcas in swimming pools appear to be a good thing, especially for the whales.

Here are some of the main points raised in the CNN Q&A with Jacobs, paired with what I discovered…

DNR Denial and More Hate….I Mean “Humor” From the Blood Sport Capital of the United States

Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic-Vote Our Wildlife

**For the anti-wolf people attempting to comment here: DON’T BOTHER. We have heard all of the “they are eating all the deer,” “they are killing bear dogs,” “eating grandchildren,” and all of the other propaganda and misleading information time and time again. You don’t care about the “livestock” when a bolt gets shot into their head and their throats are slit, so why get a high and mighty when a wolf kills one that the rancher gets reimbursed for. You don’t care about your dogs when they are running rampant through the woods terrorizing bears, coyotes, and other wildlife so don’t pretend you care when a wolf kills one trespassing in their territory. I am sure that you are crying all the way to the bank with your nice fat $2500 check while you just grab another dog from your backyard puppy mill. None of your talking points and anti-wolf…

“Sportsmen” Against Wolves: “Wyoming is fed up”

(Or did they mean to say, “overfed”?) Who do these people remind you of? (Hint: 3 letters, starting with K and ending with K.) Look at them hiding behind their Halloween masks. Sorry kids, we’re all out of candy; time to grow up. Note to wolf lovers: before you put a bead on the next childish bully wearing a white sheet over his face, you might want to wait until after the children’s holiday promoting that kind of thing is over. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=564330240283396

Baby elephants …. abused at the circus!!

It Is What It Is

Image

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, the Los Angeles City Council moved to ban the use of bullhooks on elephants (Yay!)
Los Angeles is the ONLY city to ban the bullhooks, and it is the hope that it will set an example for other cities. As stated by Cher in her letter to the City Council, “Your ‘yes’ vote will put Los Angeles on the right side of history and firmly in the forefront of great cities …of the world that have made the moral and ethical choice to protect elephants from abuse.”The tool is used to inflict pain and fear onto the elephant in an effort to train them. The elephants are prodded with these sharp objects to guide them through activities such as circus training. You can donate to Voice for the Animals Foundation here – http://b.cher.com/16zXiCvPhoto Credit: PETA

110 Wolves Have Been Killed After Day 8 Of Hunting Season

Exposing the Big Game

http://news.wpr.org/post/110-wolves-have-been-killed-after-day-8-hunting-season

By Chuck Quirmbach

The Department of Natural Resources says that as of Wednesday morning, 110 wolves have been killed in the wolf hunting and trapping season.

The season just started last week. Last year, 117 wolves were killed during the entire two month season. DNR official Tom Hauge says the faster pace of this year’s harvest remains a bit of a mystery.

“We really don’t have any good ideas as to why that is,” says Hauge. “But the trappers are out in large numbers this year and are having some good success.”

Most of the 110 wolves killed this year, were first caught in traps. Two people concerned about the possibility of using dogs to hunt wolves testified before the DNR Board today. Dogs are banned from the wolf hunt until December 2.

MY FIRST ANTI-FUR PROTEST: A learning experience

FUR OUT THE CLOSET:

gaga protest

I am not exactly sure where protests fit onto the spectrum of activism (See post: http://emynow.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/how-far-is-too-far/).

That aside, I was happy to hear about a protest, at Nelson Mandela Square – Johannesburg, against Lady Gaga’s wearing of fur. She was in South Africa then, performing  on her Born This Way world tour.  As we all know, Lady Gaga is a fur hag of note.

(See posthttp://emynow.wordpress.com/2013/10/02/celebs-and-fur-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/).

According to Activists for Animals Africa spokesperson Miranda Jordan, Lady Gaga “is one of the most powerful role models in existence and her arrogance could be seen as fashionable by her adoring fans. What about the animals, many of which are still alive after being skinned for the fur she wears?”

Good, I thought, my chance for active animal activism had arrived. That was in November 2012 and I have come a long way since…

Who says you need animal protein to be strong?

Who says Vegans are weak?  This guy is in better shape than most meat-eaters!  Take that your carnivores!

Video/Article Source: Free From Harm

Vegan bodybuilder Frank Medrano joins a growing number of athletes and bodybuilders whose phenomenal fitness and peak physical performance are powered exclusively by plants. As the general public is increasingly confronted with the inherent cruelty of all animal farming, and armed with the knowledge that we can live healthy lives without exploiting animals for food, more and more people are making the choice to stop consuming meat, milk and eggs. Accordingly, the list of title-winning, record-holding vegan athletes grows exponentially every year, showing it is possible not only to survive, but to thrive on a plant-based diet.

At the same time, government health experts worldwide are finally catching up with the large body of scientific evidence demonstrating that a vegan diet is not only a viable option for people of any age, but that eating plant foods instead of animal-based foods can confer significant health benefits, including reduction in incidence of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack, stroke, and several types of cancer. In 2009, the American Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, the U.S.’s oldest, largest and foremost authority on diet and nutrition, recognized that humans have no biological requirement for animals products, stating: “It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.”

When we have access to plant-based foods, and understand that humans have no biological need to consume animal products, then the question of eating animals really comes down to this basic question: when able to freely choose, would you rather help an animal, or hurt one? If you believe it is better to help than hurt others, then veganism is the only consistent expression of your values.

Banksy’s ‘Sirens of the Lambs’ highlights animal cruelty, factory farming

Of Course Vegan

Artist Banksy’s newest work in New York, titled ‘Sirens of the Lambs’, shows farm animal puppets in a slaughterhouse truck, driving around the Meatpacking district of the city. The cute puppets cry to the public, peaking their heads out and screaming.

The crowds gathered to watch the truck and the animals before reaching its destination at the slaughterhouse.

The vehicle will be in New York for two weeks, touring the city’s slaughterhouses center.

The new art by Banksy, which is part of a series of work recently released in NY, is giving the public an ‘art shock’, forcing them to make connections and sparking conversations online.

One commentator wrote online: “I’m vegetarian and I guarantee you I feel very good :-)”

So do we my friend, but we will feel much, much better when all animals are no longer exploited on our blue planet.

Wolf Slaughter Begins While the Media Finally Pays Attention…….And Asks Questions

Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic-Vote Our Wildlife

The day that wildlife advocates have dreaded and bloodthirsty sadists yearned for is upon us. This is the first day of Wisconsin’s annual wolf slaughter season. There is a big difference between this year and last year though. The mainstream media is finally paying attention to the reckless plan authored by the killing cartel controlled “Wolf Advisory Committee” and the pay to play Wisconsin DNR under former real estate developer turned agency secretary Cathy Stepp. In the past week alone some outstanding journalism from the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism has shone a light in the corrupt and barbaric practices that the DNR labels as “science,” “management,” and “tradition. The Center also asks the question about why some in this state are so obsessed with using dogs as four-legged weapons against wildlife and why this is considered “ethical” by the DNR. The most important piece from the Center is a…

Nationwide Outrage Grows Over Gruesome Abuse of “Puppy Doe”

Our Compass

Source Care2
By Susan Bird

If you hate stories about cruelty to animals, give this one a pass. It’s one of the most savagely horrific animal crimes in recent memory and it will break your heart. What’s worse is that the sick, twisted perpetrator is unknown and remains at large. Still reading? You’ve been warned.

This sweet little brindle and white pit bull puppy once had a name. She’s known to the world now as “Puppy Doe,” but once upon a time she was Kiya, and she was loved. When her owner’s landlord decided she couldn’t keep a pit bull puppy, however, a Craigslist ad found Kiya a new home. That’s when the real tragedy began to unfold.

Kiya’s new owner got rid of her a few months later, apparently because she didn’t want her anymore or couldn’t care for her. Somehow, Kiya ended up in the hands of monsters.

ALF Targets the home of an executive, rare photos give a glimpse inside North American Fur Auctions.

http://www.animalliberationfrontline.com/photos-from-inside-nafa-recent-alf-target-in-wisconsin/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AnimalLiberationFront-line+%28Animal+Liberation+Frontline%29

After the ALF targets the home of an executive, rare photos give a glimpse inside North American Fur Auctions.

In August, the Animal Liberation Front took credit for flooding the home of Brian L. MacMillan, head of North American Fur Auctions (NAFA)’s trapped animal division. Every year, NAFA sells the skins of millions of wild-trapped animals at its auction house in Toronto, Canada.

Animal Liberation Frontline has obtained several photos taken inside this auction, showing the skins of the trapped animals Brian MacMillan is responsible for bringing to market.

These photos were not intended to be seen publicly.

After viewing, there should be no question as to why Brian MacMillan was chosen as the target of the ALF’s first action against NAFA – one that will hopefully be the first of many until in vanishes from existence forever.

Elephant kills keeper at Springfield, Missouri, zoo

From Chuck Johnston, CNN
Fri October 11, 2013

(CNN) — A 41-year-old elephant named Patience charged and killed a Springfield, Missouri, zookeeper who had come to feed her Friday.

John Phillip Bradford, 62, died in the elephant enclosure at Dickerson Park Zoo, according to Springfield Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Cox. He was the manager of elephants, and had worked at the zoo for 30 years, according to a zoo statement.

Bradford was in the enclosure with two other workers when Patience charged him. The other two workers were unharmed, Cox said.

What set off the incident is unclear.

The zoo referred questions to the city.

“This is very sad day for the Zoo family, as well as our community as a whole,” zoo director Mike Crocker said in a written statement.

The elephant has been at the zoo since 1990. The zoo…
